TREASURE CHEST KIT #12:
FRIENDS ARE NICE

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

If you would like more information concerning this project, contact SERLS via e-mail at dirserls@oplin.org.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Have children draw group portraits of themselves with their best friends.

After reading Yo! Yes? a few times, children will quickly memorize this very short story. Divide your class in half and have the group perform this story "readers theatre style."

Share Together. Have children create and illustrate their own stanzas for this poem. Put these together and make your own classroom "Together Book."

Give children a paper plate and crayons. Suggest that they make face masks of a friend. The paper plate mask will have the hair and eye color of their friend. Invite the children to wear the masks and pretend to be their friends.

Be My Friend
(Sung to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb")
Will you come and play with me?
Play with me, play with me.
Will you come and play with me?
Please be my friend.

Hi Five!
(Sung to the tune of "Where is Thumbkin")
Where is one friend? Where is one friend?
(Hands behind back)
Here is one.
(Bring out one finger of one hand)
Here is one.
(Bring out one finger of other hand)
Say hello to one friend.
(Wiggle one finger)
Say hello to one friend.
(Wiggle other finger)
Bring more friends. Bring more friends.
(Hands behind back again)
Where are two friends? Where are two friends?
(Hands behind back)
Here are two.
(Bring out two fingers of one hand)
Here are two.
(Bring out two fingers of other hand)
Say hello to two friends.
(Wiggle two finger)
Say hello to two friends.
(Wiggle other two fingers)
Bring more friends. Bring more friends.
(Hands behind back again)
Where are three friends. . .
Where are four friends. . .
Where are five friends? Where are five friends?
(Hands behind back)
Here are five.
(Bring out five fingers of one hand)
Here are five.
(Bring out five fingers of other hand)
Say hello to five friends.
(Wiggle five fingers)
Say hello to five friends.
(Wiggle other five fingers)
Hi Five Hi!
(Raise one hand above head)
Hi Five Hi!
(Raise other hand above head. Then greet each other with high fives)
