ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS



Listen to "Riding in My Car" on Woody Guthrie's Nursery Days. There are plenty of sound effects in Guthrie's easy-to-learn song. Encourage children to join the fun by making "brrm" engine noises and blowing the horn with a loud "a-oorah, a-oougah."

Rooster's Off To See The World and Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car are great stories to act out with children.

Invite the children to bring in and share pictures from family vacations. Have children draw and tell stories about something which happened to them while on vacation.

Provide children with large sheets of paper. Ask them to copy or draw train cars. Then cut them out. Make a train by trailing these cars across a bulletin board or wall.

Bring in old maps and toy cars. Talk about how people use maps when they are traveling in a car. Show them where their daycare is on the map. Make car tracks over the maps using paint. Dip the wheels into the paint and let children drive the cars over the maps.



Going to Mars
Look up! See the moon? See the stars?
(Stand, arms joined above head to form moon. Release fingers and wiggle for stars)
Say, I think I'll go to Mars!
So, get in your spaceship. . .
(Squat down, arms around knees. . .)

(Jump up)
Now look up! See two moons!
(Point up)

The Airplane

The airplane has great big wings;
(Arms outstretched)
Its propeller spins around and sings.
(Make one arm go around)
"Vvvvvvvvvvv!"
The airplane goes up;
(Lift arms)
The airplane goes down;
(Lower arms)
The airplane flies high,
(Arms outstretched)
Over our town!
(Turn body around)

Auto, Auto
Auto, auto may I have a ride?
(Make fists, thumbs up. One thumb moves as if talking to other)
Yes sir; yes, sir; step right inside.
Pour in the water,
(Move first thumb as if pouring water)
Turn on the gas.
(Move same thumb and index finger to turn switch)
Chug-away, chug-away,
(Pretend to hold steering wheel and drive)
But do not go too fast!
