READING ADVENTURE TREASURE CHEST KIT #18
BOY, CAN I MOVE

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The
Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Share the big book I Went Walking. Working as a group, have the children make their own book patterned after I Went Walking. Two possibilities are "I Went Flying" or "I Went Swimming." Bind or staple the pages together to create a group big book.

After reading Mirette On The High Wire place a rope or clothes line across the room. Have the children walk across the rope pretending to be tight rope walkers. Give the "tight rope walker" a bell to carry and see if she or he can walk across the rope without ringing the bell.

Share dance books such as Boy Can He Dance! or Mirandy And Brother Wind. Then invite children to dance to the many inviting songs on the cassette Jump Children.

After reading The Catspring Somersault Flying One-Handed Flip Flop children will enjoy practicing somersaults and cartwheels. Have a leap frog race after reading Jump, Frog, Jump! or a hopping race after sharing Hop Jump.

Finish your story program with the song "Jump Children" which is found on Marcy Marxer cassette recording of the same name. In this song Marxer asks a group of children if they want to jump. The children respond with loud"Yeah." Then she asks if they want to dance and the answer is again "Yeah." Encourage your children to jump and dance along. (See how your class responds if you ask them if they want to clean the room).

Five Little Froggies
Five little froggies sitting on a well
(Cup hands)
One peeped in and down he fell
(Raise one finger)
Froggies jumped high
(Wave hands high above head)
Froggies jumped everywhere to and fro.
(Wave arms in all directions.)
Froggies jumped low
(Lower hands to floor)
Four little froggies sitting on a well. . .

I Like to Dance
(Sung to the tune of "Skip to My Lou")
I like to dance, how about you?
I like to dance, how about you?
I like to dance, how about you?
Skip to my Lou, my darling
I like to skip. . .
I like to run. . .
I like to march. . .
I like to swing. . .
I Like To. . .
This is the way I like to swim,
Over at the pool.
(Move arms as if swimming)
This is the way I roller skate,
When I'm not in school.
(Move feet like roller skating)
This is the way I fly my kite,
When the wind begins to blow.
(Holding kite string)
This is the way I play jump rope,
See how fast I can go.
(Action jumping rope)
