ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Read Imogene's Antlers and ask your children to think about what it would be like to wake up one morning with antlers. Ask them to draw a picture of themselves wearing antlers.

Read a silly book or two about cows. Then share Milk: From Cow To Carton. Talk about where milk comes from. Enjoy glasses of milk.

Read To Bathe A Boa. Count the children who like taking baths. Then count the children who don't. Follow up with water play or bubble blowing activities.

The cassette tape Rosenshontz Tickles You! is full of silly songs. In "These Are Questions," Rosenshontz asks questions that kids are apt to ask. Is the sun ever cold? Do teeth talk? All of the questions they ask have "No!" for the answer. Kids will soon catch on and will shout out "No!" In "I Wish I Was," kids will have fun throwing out zany suggestions. Have them name an animal they wish they could be. Then have them think of an action that rhymes with that animal. "I wish I was a mouse. I'd sleep inside your house."

After viewing the wordless VHS The Bear And The Fly ask children to dictate dialogue for each of the bears during the story and after they wake up.

This Little Cow
This little cow eats grass;
(Hold up one hand, fingers erect, bend down one finger)
This little cow eats hay;
(Bend down another finger)
This little cow drinks water;
(Bend down another finger)
And this little cow runs away;
(Bend down another finger)
This little cow does nothing;
(Bend down last finger)
But lie and sleep all day.

Moppety-Mop and Poppety-Pop
Moppety-mop and Poppety-pop
Went on their way with a skip and a hop;
One with a skip and one with a hop,
Moppety-mop and poppety-pop.

Hippety Hop
Hippety hop to the candy shop
To buy a stick of candy
One for you,
One for me,
And one for sister Sandy.
