ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Encourage children to bring teddy bears and introduce their favorite stuffed toys. Then invite children and teddy bears to enjoy your storytime. Listen to "Waltzing with Bears" on Priscilla Herdman's recording Star Dreamer.

Make a "Teddy Bear Picnic" bulletin board for your classroom. Have children cut pictures of food from magazines and paste the pictures on paper plates. Use a red and white checkered tablecloth for a bulletin board background. You can make get the same effect by using red and white construction paper. Place a picnic basket shape in the center. Cut a bear shape for each child in your group. (You can use the pattern provided with the bear felt pieces). Invite children to color their bears. Set each bear on the table cloth with it's paper plate of "food."

Play "The Bear in His Cave". Show a group of children a selection of objects on the floor. Have them turn their backs and recite the following fingerplay. While the others are reciting have another child pretend to be a bear and creep in to carry away one object. The first child to identify the missing object becomes the bear.

The bear went over the mountain
(Extend forearm, close and drop fist)
The bear went over the mountain
(Slowly creep fingers of other hand over 1st hand to wrist)
The bear went over the mountain
To see what he could see.
And what do you think he saw?
And what do you think he saw?
The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
Is all that he did see!
So the bear went down the mountain,
(Creep fingers down slopping arm)
So the bear went down the mountain,
So the bear went down the mountain,
Very happily.

Honey Bear
A little brown bear went in search of some honey.
Isn't it funny - a bear wanting honey?
He sniffed at the breeze,
(Sniff air with nose)
And he listed for bees,
(Cup hand to ear and listen)
And would you believe,
He even climbed trees.
(Fingers of one hand climb opposite arm)

Ten Little Teddy Bears
Sung to the tune of "Ten Little Indians"
One little, two little, three little Teddy Bears,
Four little, five little, six little Teddy Bears,
Seven little, eight little, nine little Teddy Bears,
Ten little Teddy Bears.

This Little Bear
This little bear has a fur suit
(Thumb)
This little bear acts very cute
(Pointer finger)
This little bear is bold and cross,
(Middle finger)
This little bear likes bacon and honey;
(Little finger)
But he can't buy them, he has no money!
