READING ADVENTURE TREASURE CHEST KIT #32
DRAGONS, DINAOSAURS & OTHER NOT-SO-FEARSOME BEASTS

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Make dinosaur fossils out of Playdough or plasticene clay, plastic wrap and toys. Roll or pat the clay so that it is flat. Place the plastic wrap over the clay. Press the toys into the clay. Remove the plastic wrap. Look at the prints. These prints would be similar to those found in shale, which is mud changed to rock over time. Ask other children to match the print with the toy.

Share the book and tape,The Dinosaur Who Lived In My Backyard. Ask children to draw pictures and make up stories about a dinosaur who lives in their backyard.

Watch the Charlotte's Diamonds VHS Diamonds And Dragons.Charlotte Diamond is a Canadian musical recording artist for kids. She is very creative and popular. On this VHS, you will find a short, rap-like chant with sound effects called "Dicky Dicky Dinosaur." In the song someone steps on Dicky's tail and the children yell "Yipes!" When the T-Rex is after Dicky, the kids yell "Run!" And when Dicky roars, the kids roar back.

Ask your local children's librarian about more fingerplays, activities and books such as these recommended titles:

• Dragon Off An Ordinary Family by Margaret Mahy. When Mr. Belsaki chooses a dragon as a pet for his, what was an ordinary family begins some extraordinary adventures.
• Eyes Of The Dragon by Margaret Leaf. An artist agrees to paint a dragon on the wall of a Chinese village, but the mayor's insistence that he paint eyes on the dragon has amazing results.
• Alexander And The Dragon by Katharine Holabird. Alexander is afraid of the dark, especially when the shadow under his bed becomes a fierce dragon.
• Henry And The Dragon by Eileen Christelow. At bedtime, Henry Rabbit is sure he sees the shadow of a dragon on his bedroom wall even though his parents can find no evidence of it.
• I Hear A Nose by Diane Goode. A dragon carries off a boy and his mother just as the boy is going to sleep.
• Klippity Klop by Ed Emberley. Prince Krispin and his horse, Dumpling, set out on an adventure that takes them over a bridge, across a stream, and through a field, until they bump into a dragon.
• Milk And Cookies by Frank Asch. Baby Bear dreams about feeding a dragon some cookies and milk.
• Unicorn And The Lake by Marianna Mayer. When a serpent poisons the lake where all the animals drink, only the unicorn has the power to save them.
