READING ADVENTURE TREASURE CHEST KIT #35
I HAVE A COMMUNITY

This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons.  The kit is geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the interest of toddlers and early school age children.  The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the kits.

ACTIVITY IDEAS AND FINGERPLAYS

Share the big book,Truck. Ask children to imagine that they are perched in the cab of the huge rig, driving across the country. Share the book again, asking them to narrate what they see and do along their truck journey. Then work together to plan and draw a mural depicting the trip taken by the red truck. Bring in toy trucks to drive along the roadways, observing the traffic signs included in the mural, as appropriate.

Collect an assortment of moving and other boxes. Read Roxaboxen and invite children to make their own community of box houses. Encourage them to build a real community with a police station, doctor's office, post office, restaurant, school, child care center, library and anything else which they think makes up a community.

Read Jan Brett's Town Mouse, Country Mouse and then act this story out using the masks provided.

Sally Rogers' cassette What Can One Little Person Do? contains many singable songs. In "The Stoplight", Rogers sings about stopping for red and going on green. Make a felt traffic light with interchangeable green and red lights. Use these as you share this song with children.

Five Fun Hats
In my box are five fun hats.
The first one is a nurse's cap.
The second one is red for a fire fighter.
The third one, a baker's is tall and lighter.
Wear the fourth one for baseball
Take along your bat.
Save the fifth one for your birthday
It's a party hat!

Ten Brave Firefighters
Ten Brave firefighters sleeping in a row
(Fingers curled to make sleeping firefighters)
Ding, dong goes the bell.
(Pull down on pretend bell)
And down the pole they go.
(With fists together make hands slide down pole)
Off on the engine, oh, oh, oh.
When all the fire's out, home sooslow.
Back to bed, and in a row.
(Curl all fingers for sleeping firefighters)

Traffic Policeman
The traffic policeman holds up his hand.
(Hold up hand, palm forward)
He blows the whistle,
(Pretend to blow whistle)
He gives the command.
(Hold up hand again)
When the cars are stopped.
(Hold up hand)
He waves at me.
(Wave hand as if indicating for someone to go)
Then I may cross the street you see
