This Reading Adventure
Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled to provide a thematic list of storytime
materials for use by enhanced members and their patrons. The kit is
geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the
interest of toddlers and early school age children. The Activity Ideas are designed to be aids to use the
materials listed in the kits.

EXTRA ITEM |
Slugs Book And Slug Toy |
Share one of the books about fireflies and let the children enjoy the
glow-in-the- dark firefly puppet. You can also create a firefly by covering the
top part of a flashlight with yellow cellophane plastic wrap. Simply turn on
the switch and instant firefly!
The cassette Nature Nuts by Mary Miche deals with the
environment. The Song "Go Into The Night" is a cumulative song
featuring the sounds of night animals. The simple two-verse structure builds
upon coyote, frog, cricket and owl noises noises kids will be happy to provide.
During the call and response song "Packin' For My Hike" the
singer lists items she is contemplating taking on a camping trip. The children
can shout "yes" or "no" for each item she mentions. A
first-aid kit? Yes! Video games? No! Other winning songs include "Hey
Ms. Spider," "Bats Eat Bugs"and "Salamanders And
Frogs."
I'm Being Followed By A Big Brown Spider
I'm being followed by a big brown spider,
I'm being followed by a big brown spider,
I'm being followed by a big brown spider,
And I don't like it very much.
Oh! no, no, no, shes' up to my toe, toe, toe.
Oh! Gee, gee, gee, she's up to my knee, knee, knee.
Oh! Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle, she's up to my middle, middle, middle.
Oh! Heck, heck, heck, she's up to my neck, neck, neck.
Oh! Dread, dread, dread, she's on top of my head, head, head.
And she tickles, tickles, tickles.
(Move hand up the body along with the verses)
One, Two, Three
1, 2, 3, there's a bug on me!
(Pretend to brush it off)
Where did it go?
(Look around)
I don't know.
(Shrug)
An Ant Hill
Here's the ant hill, with no ants about
(Make fist)
And I say, little ants, won't you please come out?
(Look at fist)
Out they come trooping in answer to my call.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and that's all.
(Raise and count fingers)
The Reptile Zoo
Sung to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush"
Chorus:
Let's go to the Reptile Zoo, the Reptile Zoo, the Reptile Zoo
There's fun for me and fun for you at the Reptile Zoo in the morning.
Verses:
(Act out each motion described)
1. This is the way the lizards crawl.
2. This is the way the rattle snakes hiss.
3. This is the way the turtles walk.
4. This is the way the alligators eat.
5. This is the way the crocodiles stare.
