This Reading Adventure Treasure Chest Kit has been assembled
to provide a thematic list of storytime materials for use by enhanced members
and their patrons. The kit is
geared toward the preschool age group yet is flexible enough to capture the
interest of toddlers and early school age children. The Activity
Ideas are designed to be aids to use the materials listed in the
kits.

After viewing the VHS Changes, Changes have the children build
with blocks and boxes. Make your own blocks by stuffing large grocery bags with
crumpled up pieces of newspaper. Tape the tops securely. Then have fun
building.
Read My Favorite Time Of Year. Have children make their own
season books describing what they like and don't like about each season.
Read Red Leaf Yellow Leaf. Have children collect leaves and sort
them by color. Encourage children to learn and recite this poem. Surprise your
children by dropping colored paper leaves on them during the poem.
Read Muddigush then have children fingerpaint with chocolate pudding pretending that it is
mud.
Butterfly, Butterfly
(Sung to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")
Butterfly, butterfly fly away,
You were a caterpillar yesterday.
Butterfly, butterfly you never stay,
Ever flying to a new day.
Butterfly, butterfly fly away,
You were a caterpillar yesterday.
Climatology
Sometimes it gets hot outside
And the sun shines brightly down.
(Fan face as if hot)
Sometimes it gets cold outside
And the snow lies all around.
(Shiver)
Other times a cloud can fall
And fog comes rolling in.
(Wave arms ahead and walk a few paces as if blind)
Or thunder and lightning kick the sky
And make us laugh and grin.
(Smile and clap)
The Caterpillar
A caterpillar crawled to the top of a tree.
(Index finger of left hand moves up right arm)
"I think I'll take a nap," said he.
so - under a leaf he began to creep
(Wrap right hand over left fist)
To spin his cocoon, and he fell asleep.
All winter he slept in his cocoon bed,
(Keep right hand closed over left fist)
"Till spring came along one day and said,
"Wake up, wake up, little sleepyhead.
(Shake left fist with right hand)
Wake up, it's time to get out of bed."
So - he opened his eyes that sunshiny day.
(Spread fingers and look into hand)
Lo! He was a butterfly - and flew away!
(Move hand in flying motion)
