For local history and genealogy lovers, maps are rich, but sometimes overlooked, sources of information. They can paint a vivid picture, offer rich insights, and fascinating stories, if you know what to look for.

In this interactive and informative program, attendees will discover a variety of sources (both physical and digital) for accessing map data including:

  • Sanborn Maps,
  • Historical atlases
  • USGS Maps

Attendees will also learn:

  • Tools and tips for analyzing the historical and community information maps contain
  • Applications for this information, including suggestions for hands-on learning activities and community projects.

While many of these resources are online, we'll look at examples of digital and paper maps to uncover clues about the past and present including locations of railroads, changes in rivers and roads, and the growth of towns and cities.
